For an industry that prides itself on caution, this is a remarkable bet. Solid-state cells offer roughly twice the energy density of current lithium-ion technology, but the manufacturing yield problems are not yet solved at any scale that matters for cars.
The decision is being driven by capital, not engineering. Investors have made clear they will not fund another generation of incremental improvements. Either the legacy players catch the next inflection, or they fade into low-margin assembly work for someone else.
The risk is the timeline. If the chemistry slips even eighteen months, the entire 2028 product cadence falls out of sync with the marketing campaigns already being commissioned today.
